Reference 3A Grand Veena

A host of significant upgrades have been introduced, making this wonderful line of speakers even better.
• Internal Wiring: New CCC (continuous cast pure copper) internal wiring with clear Teflon dielectric. Appropriate thickness of the wire is used for each driver (0.6mm. dia. for tweeter, 0.8mm. for full range and 1.2 mm for bass etc...).
• Mechanical Grounding of the Drivers: Drains spurious vibration energy from the driver frames.
• Copper Shorting Ring: Improves linearity in driver voice coil magnetic gap.
• Soft brass screws and phenolic washers used to fasten and isolate drivers: Reduces interactive driver/frame resonances and isolates drivers from the cabinets.
• New larger, height adjustable brass cones and brass floor pads: Better than aluminum alloy or steel isolation cones.
• New five way binding posts with gold plated tellurium copper conductors: Better conductor than the commonly used brass for further improved clarity.
• New C.C.C. copper bi-wire jumpers: Clearly better than the jumpers previous used.

The Grand Veena adds scale and weight to the refined performance of the smaller Reference 3a models. Long prized for resolution of subtle detail and accurate harmonic timbre, until now these designed were not known for a big powerful sound. The Grand Veena combines both ends of the dynamic envelope and frequency realm.
The Grand Veena is a tall, slender tower housing five seamlessly integrated unique drivers. The front baffle is tilted back at a critical angle and the drivers are positioned precisely for correct time alignment and sound wave propagation. The multi-chambered cabinet provides isolation to avoid interference between the drivers operating at different frequency ranges.
The hand-built 7" (170 mm.) main driver is hyper-exponentially shaped and covers a wide range of the music evenly. Utilizing advanced materials and techniques the driver is designed to not require crossovers and it is coupled directly to the amplifier. The potentially harmful effects of crossover components are removed from the path so the musical signal arrives at the driver uninterrupted and intact. Every tiny musical detail is tracked precisely and immediately.
Two powerful 8" (21mm.) long excursion bass drivers are used for extended low frequencies. Very stiff and light cones of Fiberglass and Kevlar in honeycomb construction are used to eliminate driver break-up modes. Rigid cast metal driver frames are used to ensure mechanical integrity. A unique acoustic device is constructed internally to absorb excess pressure generated by the enclosure's standing waves to avoid interference with the driver's motion. With only a quasi-second order low-pass filter, low frequencies are tuned to extend flatly down to 36Hz. while significant information is still realized at even very low 20Hz.
What Reference 3A has accomplished with the Grand Veena is, by any standard, extraordinary. Of the several dozen other speakers in its general price range that I’ve listened to carefully, I’ve heard none that matches its overall performance, and it is absolutely unequaled in my experience from the midbass on up. Some competitors at the price have better bass extension, but none I’ve heard exceeds it in bass detail. And some create a more detailed soundstage but none does a better job of re-creating the total experience of the recorded event.
As a reviewer, I appreciate gear that gives me the best window on the music, as well as insight into the other audio gear in the system. And as a guy who loves music, I appreciate an audio system that gives me as much of the music as it can without getting in the way. The Reference 3A Grand Veena does both, and I’m pleased to make it an Ultra Audio Select Component. These modest-looking boxes -- and the skills of the guys who design and build them -- will be appreciated in the audiophile world for a long time to come.
